About
AI Governance Check is a companion decision-support tool for the Practical AI Governance Toolkit from LTECwithLance. It helps organizations estimate the governance attention an AI use may require and identifies practical resources to address the risks and control gaps found.
The assessment begins with a plain-language description of the intended AI use. An AI context analyst extracts important context, and the user reviews and corrects that interpretation. Four core structured questions then capture information sensitivity, AI authority and human review, consequences of error, and whether the intended purpose may be prohibited or clearly unacceptable. Uses above the Low path receive a safeguards check.
The final governance path is calculated by a deterministic rules engine. The AI context analyst does not assign the path. Results use the same four internal governance paths as the toolkit: Low, Moderate, High Impact, and Stop / Escalate. Specialist review may be required within High Impact or Stop / Escalate, but it is not a separate fifth path.
AI Governance Check is designed for small and mid-sized businesses, nonprofits, associations, colleges and universities, training organizations, local and regional government bodies, and professional-service firms that need a practical, plain-language approach to AI governance.
This application does not provide legal advice, determine statutory AI classifications, or certify compliance with NIST, ISO, the EU AI Act, or any other law, regulation, or standard.
The five governance stages
- Know: Know which AI systems and use cases exist.
- Own: Assign responsibility and accountability.
- Assess: Determine the level and nature of risk.
- Control: Apply safeguards appropriate to the risk.
- Monitor: Review the system over time and respond to problems.
Complexity should increase only when risk increases.
